Dr. Melanie L. Hafford is a fellowship trained bariatric surgeon. She is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and a fellow in the American College of Surgeons. Growing up outside of Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Hafford became interested in medicine and public health. This interest was cultivated further at Emory University and the Medical College of Georgia. She first realized the impact of morbid obesity as a growing public health crisis when she interned at the Department of Health and Human Services in Washington, DC, working to implement public health initiatives to combat obesity. Dr. Hafford then completed her general surgery residency at the prestigious University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, followed by a bariatric and minimally invasive surgery fellowship at The Methodist Hospital in Houston. Returning to Dallas as an Assistant Professor of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, she served as the bariatric program and fellowship director prior to deciding to enter into private practice.
Dr. Hafford’s practice includes bariatric surgery (laparoscopic gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and revisions), laparoscopic foregut surgery (Nissen fundoplication), advanced upper endoscopy, and minimally invasive general surgery. Nationally, Dr. Hafford is an active member in the Society of American and Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), the American College of Surgeons (ACS), and the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS) and she serves on several committees. Her achievements have been recognized on a national level. She is currently the bariatric surgeon for the Medical and Surgical Clinic of Irving.
Dr. Furman believes in an individualized and comprehensive approach to wellness and weight management. His interest and passion in managing overweight and obesity stems from his experience in managing patients with obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia and his recognition of how an effective plan can improve or eliminate these health risks and improve well-being.
Dr. Furman is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine and and Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine. He is also a member of The Medical Council of Canada and member of The College of Family Physicians of Canada. He has fulfilled the requirements of the College of Family Physicians of Canada for designation as Certificant of the College of Family Physicians of Canada, CCFP. He has also achieved Fellowship in the College of Family Physicians of Canada. Dr. Furman is also a member of the Canadian Obesity Network.
Dr. Furman has been providing care as a family practitioner at the Medical and Surgical Clinic of Irving since 1997 and more recently has been providing care in Obesity Medicine.
